The Run Down

The Dual Shock 3 for Sony's Playstation 3 will use the same rumble technology that Sony employed for the previous incarnations of it's prized Dual shock controllers. This is notable because Sony had been in a deeply heated and very expensive legal battle with Immersion Corporation, the inventors of the rumble tech.

Also, it should be mentioned that The Dual Shock 3 will utilize both rumble functionality as well as 6 axis control that the standard PS3 controller uses, so gamers won't have to switch controller in and out when they play different games. This of course basically makes the standard controller outdated after less than a year of being on the market...

The Dual Shock 3 has already been released in Japan since November. North America and Europe can expect to see the new Dual Shock sometime in early 2008. Unfortunately, Sony is pulling a PSOne and making the Dual Shock sold separately from the system. Meaning, after early 2008, if you walk into Bestbuy to purchase a PS3, you'll need to buy your Dual Shocks separately, as they won't be in the box waiting for you. Interestingly, when Sony released the PS2, they packaged the Dual Shock 2 in with the system. Why they wouldn't do this with the PS33 is a mystery.

The Dual Shock 3 is currently retailing in Japan for just under $60 Us. You can expect that figure to either remain the same or rise when it comes stateside. It may be worth the risk to import now, instead of wait for the North American price hike later.

Sony has also announced that games previously released without rumble support will be upgraded with downloadable patches over the Playstation Network. These patches will even include some of the Playstation's downloadable games as well. No word on whether or not publishers HAVE to patch their games, but obviously it would be a good idea.
